About the Internship
Interns will gain hands-on experience across various departments at the Billion Oyster Project, contributing to environmental restoration, community engagement, and marine science research. Each intern will complete a final research project based on their interests and present it to the organization at the end of the internship.

Programmatic Focus Areas
Interns can choose a specific focus area, gaining targeted experience while also engaging with other departments.
1. Community Reefs
Conduct hands-on fieldwork at community reefs in NYC
Lead public education initiatives and community outreach
Represent the Billion Oyster Project at events
2. Community Science
Collect and analyze water quality samples
Assist in oyster research and data tracking
Engage with students and community members in scientific programs
3. Donor Relations & Communications
Draft social media, newsletters, and campaign content
Assist in donor outreach and fundraising efforts
Support event planning for donor engagement
4. Finance & Operations
Assist in financial tracking and audits
Help with office management and inventory tracking
Support the team in maintaining efficient operations
5. Outdoor Learning
Facilitate environmental education programs for students (K-12)
Lead hands-on science activities and harbor expeditions
Represent BOP at educational fairs and outreach events
6. Public Outreach
Engage with visitors at the Governors Island Exhibit House
Organize and participate in public events and guided tours
Collaborate with artists and educators on community science projects
7. Restoration Field Support
Support oyster reef restoration and shell collection
Assist in gear maintenance and data collection
Participate in hatchery production and oyster deployment
8. Volunteer & Fabrication
Organize public volunteer events
Engage the public in shell processing and oyster structure construction
Support shoreline cleanups and community service initiatives
Research Project Requirement
Interns will develop a final research project, which can be creative, educational, scientific, or policy-based. Potential ideas include:
✅ Art Installations & Storytelling (multimedia exhibits, photography projects)
✅ Educational Tools (games, workshops, interactive activities)
✅ Scientific Research (biodiversity surveys, data visualization, environmental analysis)
✅ Community Engagement & Policy (social media campaigns, public policy proposals)
Internship Requirements
✔ Ability to work weekends
✔ Strong communication skills (verbal, written, public speaking)
✔ Interest in environmental science, education, or community engagement
✔ Comfort with outdoor fieldwork (various weather conditions)
✔ Some roles require lifting up to 50 pounds
