Lead Program Assistant for Middle School Programs is responsible for assisting in the management of Rocking the Boat's suite of boatbuilding, sailing, and environmental education!

Responsibilities:

  • Program Development and Execution: Support the successful delivery of a suite of programs for middle school youth by assisting the Middle School Program Manager in the following:
    • Delivering environmental, rowing, sailing, wooden boatbuilding, and other STEM-based afterschool and summer programs for middle school participants
    • Developing and formalizing activity plans and curriculum
  • Staff Supervision and Development: Supporting Middle School Program staff in successfully meet program goals
    • Assist in hiring up to three seasonal Program Assistants
    • Communicate with the Middle School Program Manager regarding any issues related to Program Assistants as needed
    • Lead the program and manage the Program Assistants when the Middle School Program Manager is unavailable
    • Provide leadership support during off-site day and overnight trips
    • Offer support during program delivery and model best practices for Program Assistants
    • In collaboration with the Middle School Program Manager, monitor the quality of program delivery and provide formative feedback to Program Assistants
  • Program Administration: Supports Middle School Program Manager in the timely and accurate entry of data necessary to deliver successful programs
    • Uses the Sawyer to maintain accurate participant information and attendance
    • Assists in the collection, aggregation and analysis of data on the Middle School Program quality to drive program improvements
  • Program Facilities, Equipment, and Safety: Ensuring that the physical resources are in place to provide safe and successful programming
    • Follow and enforces all Rocking the Boat safety protocols; identifies and corrects any safety issues
    • Ensure appropriate use and care of Rocking the Boat's boat inventory including wooden rowing craft and other waterfront equipment such as dollies, oars, and personal flotation devices; informs the Public Programs Manager of all maintenance and repair needs
    • Maintain Middle School Classroom and equipment used in the classroom, boat shop and for field work

Qualifications (Required):

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Outdoor education teaching experience
  • Ability to lead groups through high-energy, physically challenging activities on both land and water
  • Experience with lesson planning
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and an ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications
  • Willingness to work long days and weekends

Preferred

  • An understanding of the three main learning styles (Kinesthetic, Auditory and Visual)
  • Experience working with middle school aged students and with students with learning or behavioral disabilities
  • Boating experience
  • Basic woodworking skills
  • Sailing experience
  • Spanish language skills

Rocking the Boat offers:

  • Between 20 and 35 hours a week depending on the season.
  • Up to 40 Sick and Safe hours per calendar year, accrued at a rate of one hour of Safe and Sick time earned to every 15 hours worked
  • Opportunity to work with a creative, well-funded organization committed to community development and youth empowerment.
  • Salary ranging from $20 to $23 per hour, commensurate with experience
