Health Science Academy Administrative Assistant

Support an enriching STEM program for middle and high school students in NYC, where you'll help facilitate engaging Zoom and in-person classes and assist with lesson planning and outreach.

The Health Science Academy (HSA) is a core program of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH). Founded in 1994, HSA is a collaboration between the Institute and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (SUNY DS) in Brooklyn, NY. HSA’s health science pipeline program partners with public and parochial schools to offer academic health science enrichment afterschool programs to middle (during the school day at the schools) and high school students (afterschool at SUNY Downstate). HSA serves over 300 students, grades 6-12, per academic year. The main pipeline component, “the Academy,” is HSA’s 3-year (six semesters) program for high achieving high school students (sophomore-senior year) interested in health and science careers. Since 1994, HSA has served over 2,800 students in grades 6-12 and our alumni.

Position Highlights:

Role: Administrative Assistant

Audience: Minority high school students

Location: New York City area (residency required)

Schedule: September 2024 - May 2025, Fall 2024 & Spring 2025 semesters

Compensation: $17.00-$19.00/hour, based on experience

Requirements: Enrolled college student with science or health science background; NYC resident preferred

Responsibilities:
● Co-pilot HSA and related programs via Zoom, assisting with class management (chat, attendance, screen sharing) and supporting in-person classes at SUNY.
● Ensure the safety and engagement of students (ages ~12-18) in assigned activities in Middle School or Academy classes.
● Prep for weekly lessons, adhere to all administrative needs as designated by the Senior Education Coordinator (e.g., making phone calls to parents and HS liaisons)
● Performs miscellaneous HSA job-related duties as assigned (emailing applications & recruitment materials)
● Serve as a positive role model

Qualifications:

Must be a matriculated college student with course work in the sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology), health sciences, and/or education of high school children (e.g., after-school curriculum, STEM pre-college programs, youth development, public health).
● Proficient in Zoom (recording, screen sharing, etc.)
● Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
● Strong organizational skills
● Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
● Ability to analyze problems and coordinate effectively with team members.
● Experience teaching a health science curriculum for URM youth is a plus.
● Experience working with high school-aged URM youth is a plus.
● Ability to work with racially diverse populations.

Reports to: Health Science Academy staff

Salary: $17.00-$19.00/hour based on experience; monthly invoicing
Time Frame: Fall 2024 & Spring 2025, September 2024-May 2025
